Songs Woven from the Silver Screen

Songs Woven from the Silver Screen

Barocco Foundation, in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, presents an engaging lunchtime recital at Our Lady of Victory Church on Tuesday 14 April 2026 at 12:30pm.

This concert will feature the acclaimed Maltese guitarist Bernard Catania in a rich and varied programme that celebrates the expressive versatility of the classical guitar. Audiences will be taken on a musical journey that moves seamlessly between timeless film themes, beloved popular standards, and evocative works from the classical and Latin American repertoire.

The programme opens with a selection of iconic melodies, including Speak Softly Love from “The Godfather” by Nino Rota, alongside Fly Me to the Moon by Bart Howard and the ever-popular Moon River by Henry Mancini. Romantic classics such as Bésame Mucho by Consuelo Velázquez and Perfidia by Alberto Domínguez add a touch of nostalgia, while Blue Moon by Richard Rodgers and Sleepwalk by Santo Farina and Johnny Farina further enrich the programme with their distinctive charm.

The recital also highlights the guitar’s expressive depth through works such as Swing ’59 and Spanish Guitar Blues by Charlie Byrd, alongside evocative Maltese compositions including Song of the Sea by Gordon Mizzi and Mdina by Tony Pace.

A more reflective and classical dimension is brought through Prelude No. 1 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, the delicate La Petite Fille de la Mer by Vangelis Papathanassiou, and the much-loved Cavatina by Stanley Myers. The programme concludes with vibrant Latin American influences in Verano Porteño by Astor Piazzolla and Joropo from “Suite del Recuerdo” by José Luis Merlin, bringing the recital to an energetic and colourful close.
