The Ave Maria: A Lunchtime Journey Through Sacred Music

 

Barocco Foundation, in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, is delighted to present a special lunchtime recital on Tuesday, 20 October 2026 at 12:30pm at the historic Our Lady of Victory Church in Valletta.

 

This evocative recital brings together two accomplished Maltese artists, distinguished soprano Dame Marita Bezzina and versatile pianist Ramona Zammit Formosa, for a programme inspired by one of the most enduring and beloved prayers in sacred music, the Ave Maria.

 

The recital opens with Giuseppe Verdi’s moving La Vergine degli Angeli, followed by his celebrated Ave Maria from Otello. The programme then turns towards a selection of Ave Maria settings by Maltese composers, offering an opportunity to discover and appreciate the rich contribution of local composers to this much-loved musical tradition. Works by, Silvio Zammit, Charles Camilleri and Giuseppe Fenech will be presented alongside piano interludes, creating a varied programme that moves between vocal and instrumental expression.

 

The recital concludes with two internationally renowned settings of the Ave Maria, Franz Schubert’s much-loved composition and the setting by Gómez, bringing the programme to a serene and reflective close.

 

Set within the atmospheric surroundings of Our Lady of Victory Church, one of Valletta’s historic places of worship, this lunchtime recital offers audiences the opportunity to enjoy an hour of beautiful music while also experiencing Malta’s remarkable artistic and architectural heritage.
