Strings of Elegance: A Journey through Time and Tradition

Our Lady of Victory church in Valletta will once again host the popular weekly lunchtime concert organised by Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa.  This captivating recital, featuring the talented guitarist Bernard Catania, will take place on Tueday 5 March 2024 at 12:30pm.

The intruiging programme begins with the soul-stirring Adagio” from Jaoquin Rodrigo’s iconic Concierto de Aranjuez and Isaac Albeniz’s “Asturias (Leyenda)” which is a timeless composition that showcases the guitarist’s virtuosity. This masterpiece will be followed by the lively and rhythmic “Danza Espanola no. 5” by Enrique Grandos and the enchanting piece from Francisco Tárrega, “Recuerdos de la Alhambra.”

This enthralling recital unfolds with the emotive “Cavatina” by Stanley Mayers and the vibrant “Choraos no.1” from the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos followed by the delicate beauty of Leo Brouwer’s “Un Dia de Noviembre”. We will then delve into the tango-inspired world of Astor Piazzolla with” Verano Porteño.” This charming concert will conclude with the Latin American piece by Fernando Bustamente “Misionera” and the eclectic “Joropo” from Jose Luis Merlin’s Suite del Recuerdo.

The Church of Our Lady of Victory, with its painted ceiling by baroque artist Alessio Erardi, is the first church of Valletta and a magnificent setting for the cultural events. It was built by Grand Master de Valette and the Order of St John after their victory in the Great Siege of 1565.  It has been restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, voluntary National Trust of Malta.

After the concert, patrons are invited for free to the cellar of the church to watch a short documentary about the building, history, and the restoration of this gem.
