Pie Jesu` - a Sacred Music Concert

Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa invites you for an exquisite  sa cred music concert during the popular weekly lunchtime concerts held at Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta.  This recital, featuring well-known soprano Andriana Yordanova and versatile pianist Ramona Zammit Formosa, takes place on Tuesday 12 March 2024 at 12:30pm.

The programme opens with masterpieces from two celebrated baroque composers, Antonio Vivaldi with “Domine Deus” from Gloria (RV 589)  and Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Quia respexit” and “Seufzer, Tränen, Kummer, Not.”  Continuing the journey from the Baroque into the Romantic period, the concert will feature “Salve Regina” by G. Puccini and the ethereal prayer  for rest and mercy, “Pie Jesu” which is part of G. Faure`’s “Requiem”. This will be followed by “Ave Maria” from Otello which is Desdemona’s prayer by G. Verdi

 During this recital, Ramona will play three captivating piano solos, enabling the audience to immerse oneself in the mesmerizing beauty of J. Pachelbel’s “Canon”, and “Litany” by F. Schubert. The last piano solo will be Cimarosa’s “Sonata in G”, which is a delightful exploration of classical elegance. Our intruiging concert unfolds with two profound pieces, F. Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and “Inflammatus” from Stabat Mater by G. Rossini. Two operatic masterpieces by G. Verdi will conclude this memorable concert, “O, Fatidica Foresta” from the operatic narrative of Joan of Arc, and “La Vergine degli Angeli” from La Forza del Destino which offers a moment of peace and benediction.

The Church of Our Lady of Victory is a magnificent setting for cultural events, with its painted ceiling by baroque artist Alessio Erardi. It is the first church of Valletta, built by Grand Master de Valette and the Order of St John after their victory in the Great Siege of 1565.  It has been restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, voluntary National Trust of Malta. 

After the concert, patrons are invited for free to the cellar of the church to watch a short documentary about the building, history, and the restoration of this gem.
