Glory All - A Celebration of Sacred Arias

Join us for a delightful Easter lunchtime concert featuring talented soprano Charlene Portelli accompanied by well-known pianist Dame Dr Lydia Buttigieg. This concert organised by Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa takes place at Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta on Tuesday 26 March 2024 at 12:30pm.

The programme promises a musical journey through Baroque masterpieces, starting with G.F. Handel’s “O Mio Signor,” followed by the ethereal beauty of G. Caccini’s “Ave Maria” and the moving “Cuius Animam Gementem” by G.B. Pergolesi.  Adding to the string of sacred programme, pianist Dame Dr Lydia Buttigieg will grace the concert with two mesmerizing piano solos, the soul-stirring rendition of “When I survey the wondrous Cross” inspired by Gregorian chant and the uplifting strains of “All Glory, laud and honour” by Melchior Teschner.

The  intruiging programme continues with three exquisite pieces.  The brilliance of W.A. Mozart’s “Laudate Dominum,” the celestial beauty of C. Franck’s “Panis Angelicus” and the emotional depth of “Repentir” by C. Gounod. To conclude this concert, Charlene will captivate the audience with the timeless beauty of P. Mascagni’s “Ave Maria” and the uplifting “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” by J. Rutter.

The Church of Our Lady of Victory is a magnificent setting for cultural events, with its painted ceiling by baroque artist Alessio Erardi. It is the first church of Valletta, built by Grand Master de Valette and the Order of St John after their victory in the Great Siege of 1565.  It has been restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, voluntary National Trust of Malta. 

After the concert, patrons are invited for free to the cellar of the church to watch a short documentary about the building, history, and the restoration of this gem.
