Spanish Guitar in Concert: A Journey through Passion and Heritage

Barocco Foundation, in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, is delighted to present a captivating lunchtime concert on Tuesday, 14 October 2025 at 12:30 PM at the historic Our Lady of Victory Church, Valletta. This evocative performance will feature acclaimed Maltese guitarist Bernard Catania, who will guide audiences through a vibrant and expressive journey of Spanish classical guitar music.

The programme, titled Spanish Concert, offers a rich tapestry of works that span several centuries, showcasing the rhythmic flair, melodic passion, and technical brilliance of Spanish guitar tradition. The concert opens with the well-loved 19th-century Spanish ballad Romanza, followed by spirited baroque pieces Espanoleta and Canarios by Gaspar Sanz. Catania will then perform the hauntingly beautiful Adagio from Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, one of the most iconic pieces in the classical guitar repertoire.

The programme continues with the fiery Asturias (Leyenda) by Isaac Albéniz and the lyrical Danza Española No. 5 (Andaluza) by Enrique Granados. Francisco Tárrega’s shimmering Recuerdos de la Alhambra will offer a moment of poetic reflection, followed by the vibrant Allegro from Federico Moreno-Torroba’s Sonatina in A. Joaquin Turina’s Garrotin & Soleares, written in homage to Tárrega, and Manuel de Falla’s poignant Homenaje: Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy deepen the programme’s tribute to the great Spanish masters.

The concert also includes two contemporary Maltese works: Song of the Sea by Gordon Mizzi and Mdina by Tony Pace, both inspired by the Mediterranean’s timeless beauty. The performance concludes with the lively and rhythmic Malagueña, a traditional 19th-century Spanish dance.

Set in the beautifully restored surroundings of Valletta’s oldest church, this lunchtime concert offers a moment of cultural and musical reflection, blending Spanish tradition with Maltese artistry.
