Hommage à Édith Piaf

Hommage à Édith Piaf

Barocco Foundation, in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, is pleased to present a captivating lunchtime concert taking place at the historic Our Lady of Victory Church in Valletta on Tuesday, 11 November at 12:30pm. This special event will feature the celebrated Maltese mezzo-soprano Claire Ghigo, accompanied by acclaimed Russian accordionist Yuri Charyguine, in a heartfelt tribute to the legendary French singer Edith Piaf.

The programme showcases a selection of Piaf’s most beloved and songs, offering audiences a journey through the music and spirit of France’s iconic voice. Opening with the vibrant La Foule composed by Ángel Cabral with French lyrics by Michel Rivgauche, the concert continues with Sous le ciel de Paris by Hubert Giraud and Jean Dréjac, evoking the charm and romance of the French capital.

The poignant Mon Dieu by Charles Dumont and lyrics by Michel Vaucaire and the rhythmic Padam Padam by Henri Contet bring to life Piaf’s dramatic artistry, while L'accordéoniste, written by Michel Emer, pays homage to the working-class roots of both the accordion and Piaf’s early career.

The haunting Les Feuilles Mortes composed by Joseph Kosma, lyrics by Jacques Prévert, internationally known as Autumn Leaves, adds a melancholic note, followed by Mon Ménage à moi, another classic by Norbert Glanzberg and Jean Constantin, showcasing Piaf’s playful charm.

Also included is L’hymne à l’amour, composed by Marguerite Monnot with lyrics by Piaf herself, written in memory of her great love, boxer Marcel Cerdan. The programme builds towards its conclusion with the timeless La Vie en rose written by Louiguy and Marguerite Monnot and lyrics by Piaf, and culminates with the defiant Non, je ne regrette rien, composed by Charles Dumont with lyrics by Michel Vaucaire—a powerful anthem of resilience and self-affirmation.

This unique performance promises an unforgettable musical experience that beautifully marries French chanson with the intimate and expressive sound of voice and accordion, set within the stunning baroque setting of one of Valletta’s most treasured churches.
