Strings in Harmony - Classical Guitar Duets

Barocco Foundation, in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, is pleased to present its next lunchtime concert on Tuesday, 20th January 2026 at 12:30pm, featuring an engaging performance by two gifted Maltese guitarists: the experienced and expressive Bernard Catania and the talented Alison Galea. Set within the serene and historic atmosphere of the church of Our Lady of Victory in Valletta, this concert promises a delightful escape into the rich colours and textures of the guitar repertoire.

The programme offers a curated musical journey spanning centuries and styles. Opening with Ferdinando Carulli’s Fughetta and Allegretto, Catania and Galea immediately set the tone with music that showcases the elegance and refined craftsmanship of early 19th-century guitar writing. This is followed by charming arrangements of Mozart’s Der Spiegel and the Romance and Rondo from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, bringing the clarity and playful grace of classical Viennese style into dialogue with the warm melody of the guitar duo.

Beethoven’s Sonata in E minor adds a touch of dramatic intensity, before giving way to the gentle beauty of Bach’s Menuet in G, one of the most recognisable melodies of the Baroque. The concert then travels across Latin America through a vibrant selection of traditional pieces from Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Nicaragua, each infused with the rhythmic freshness and melodic charm characteristic of their origins.

The recital also features João Pernambuco’s Sons de Carrilhões, a beloved choro that captures the sparkle and rhythmic vitality of early 20th-century Brazilian guitar music. The programme concludes with two evocative works by Astor Piazzolla: the expressive Dernier Lamento and the iconic Libertango, bringing the concert to a spirited and exhilarating close.
