Step into the intimate beauty of Our Lady of Victory Church this Tuesday, 24 February, as the Barocco Foundation and Din l‑Art Ħelwa present another enchanting lunchtime concert at 12:30pm. Guitarist Bernard Catania takes centre stage with a captivating Renaissance and Baroque programme, rich with expressive colours and the rhythmic vitality that shaped the earliest guitar traditions.
The concert opens with lively Renaissance dances by Cesare Negri, including Spagnoletto, Villanicco and Bianco Fiore, followed by a set of anonymous 16th-century dances. Spanish colour is further explored in Luys de Narváez’s celebrated Differencias sobre “Guardame las vacas” and Tres Diferencias por Otra Parte. Works such as Hans Neusidler’s Wascha Mesa and Der Hupff Auf, and Robert Johnson’s elegant Alman, reflect the flourishing of plucked-string music across Europe.
The programme continues with the lyrical Largo from Vivaldi’s Lute Concerto in D, Purcell’s Minuet and New Irish Tune, and dance movements by Johann Krieger. Highlights also include Bach’s Allemande and Bourrée from the Lute Suite BWV 996, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desire, an Aria by Sylvius Leopold Weiss, and Santiago de Murcia’s spirited Prelude and Allegro.
Renaissance and Baroque Guitar - will be held at Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta on Tuesday 24 February 2026 at 12:30pm. Entrance to the concert is at a suggested donation of €13. One can obtain the tickets prior to the concert from the venue itself or by email: baroccobookings@gmail.com/baroccomalta@gmail.com or phone 79680952.
