Songs from Spain

Step away from the bustle of the day and enjoy a captivating lunchtime concert at the beautiful Our Lady of Victory Church on Tuesday 27 January 2026 at 12:30pm. Organised by the Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, this recital offers a rich musical journey inspired by the colours, rhythms, and emotions of Spain, set within one of Valletta’s most historic and intimate sacred spaces.

The concert features mezzo-soprano Clare Ghigo, whose expressive artistry and warm vocal presence are perfectly complemented by the refined musicianship of the talented and versatile pianist Ramona Zammit Formosa. Together, they present a programme that blends folkloric charm, lyrical depth, and dramatic flair.

The recital opens with selections from Enrique Granados’s Tonadillas en estilo antiguo, miniature musical portraits that evoke the elegance, wit, and character of Spanish life, filled with subtle humour and nostalgic beauty. This is followed by Manuel de Falla’s beloved Siete canciones populares españolas, a vibrant and emotionally varied cycle that draws on traditional Spanish melodies, ranging from tender introspection to fiery intensity. The programme concludes with Gioachino Rossini’s delightful Canzonetta spagnuola, a sparkling homage to Spanish style infused with Rossini’s unmistakable operatic charm.

This lunchtime concert promises a rewarding musical interlude in the heart of the city—an invitation to pause, listen, and immerse oneself in the evocative sounds of Spain, brought to life by two outstanding performers in an exceptional setting.
