Voices in Harmony
Music lovers are invited to the next lunchtime concert in the much-loved weekly series organised by the Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa, taking place on Tuesday 17 February at 12:30pm at the beautifully restored Our Lady of Victory Church in Valletta. Set within this intimate and historic space, the concert promises a midday escape into the world of song, where voice and piano come together in a richly expressive programme.
This week’s recital showcases emerging sopranos Lisa Baldacchino and Bettina Zammit alongside tenor Tom Armitage, joined by the excellent pianist Elaine Mercieca. The programme journeys through some of the most evocative moments of the vocal repertoire, opening with the rapturous “Pays merveilleux… Ô paradis” from Meyerbeer’s “L’Africaine” and the serene introspection of Liszt’s Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh. Operetta sparkle arrives with Lehàr’s “Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß” from “Giuditta”, followed by the tender lyricism of Gurney’s “Sleep”. Gluck’s poignant aria “Mais d’où vient qu’il persiste à garder le silence” from “Orphée et Eurydice” leads into youthful exuberance with Gounod’s much-loved “Je veux vivre” from “Roméo et Juliette”. The celebrated “Flower Duet” from Delibes’ “Lakmé” offers a moment of pure vocal blend before the dramatic intensity of Beethoven’s “Gott! Welch Dunkel hier!” from “Fidelio”. The programme continues with Barber’s introspective “Must the Winter Come So Soon?” from “Vanessa”, Puccini’s heart-rending “O mio babbino caro” from “Gianni Schicchi” and concludes with the graceful farewell of “Soave sia il vento” from Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”.
