On Tuesday 3rd March 2026 at 12:30pm, the historic and intimate setting of Our Lady of Victory Church in Valletta, will provide the perfect backdrop for Melodies After Noon, a captivating lunchtime concert organised by the Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa.
This evocative programme brings together some of the most expressive and atmospheric works from the Romantic repertoire, performed by soprano Alexandra Camilleri Gambin and the well-known pianist Elaine Mercieca. Together, they will guide audiences through a landscape of longing, reflection and lyrical beauty.
At the heart of the programme is a selection from Les Nuits d’été by Hector Berlioz, a song renowned for its poetic sensitivity and emotional depth. “Sur les lagunes” unfolds with aching sorrow and dark intensity, “Absence” breathes tender yearning, while “Au cimetière” offers a haunting meditation on love and loss. These songs reveal Berlioz’s masterful ability to fuse text and music into deeply personal expression.
The romantic atmosphere continues with the wordless, floating lines of “Vocalise” by Sergei Rachmaninoff, a work of pure melodic radiance, followed by the colour and character of the Two Hebrew Melodies by Maurice Ravel, where exoticism and refinement intertwine in music of striking individuality.
German Lied is represented by the dramatic narrative of “Der Zwerg” by Franz Schubert, a gripping miniature opera in which passion and tragedy collide, and by the serene and tender “Wiegenlied” by Richard Strauss, a cradle song of luminous calm and warmth.
Melodies After Noon: will be held at Our Lady of Victory church, Valletta on Tuesday 03rd March 2026 at 12:30pm. Entrance to the concert is at a suggested donation of €13.
